Sammy arrived at Popcorn Park Sanctuary, just shy of his 2nd birthday. Though loved dearly by his owner, his needs as a wild animal couldn’t be met in a domestic setting. Recognizing this, his owner made the compassionate choice to bring him to Popcorn, where he could have the space and care suited to his unique nature.
In many states, owning a serval is either illegal or requires special permits. Unfortunately, exotic cat breeding in this country has progressed from Tigers and Lions to smaller cats like Servals, Caracals and Ocelots. They are bred in captivity and are sold as kittens or adolescents to private owners for between $3,000 and $5,000.
Despite advertised misconceptions, their wild instincts are not bred out of them, they are not suited for life as a household pet. A Serval will mature in a little over a year becoming a 25-pound adult. They are exceptionally quick and with a vertical leap of 10 ft from a sitting position they becomes an immediate danger to children, domestic pets and neighbors.
Servals are remarkable looking cats, and Sammy is no exception, truly captivating with big, expressive eyes, cream-and-brown spotted coat, and iconic, oversized ears unique to African Servals.
Sammy is a lucky cat, now in a safe, enriching habitat that allows him to live out his life in a natural setting. He has the freedom to explore his spacious enclosure, bask in the attention of caring staff, and greet visitors with the curiosity and playfulness so typical of his species.
Tigers in America is happy to partner with Popcorn Park and provide financial assistance to care for Sammy.
